FreeMasonry as a CornerStone!
The Masonic ceremony of laying conerstones is very important in Freemasonry. It is a tradition that has been practiced for many generations. We learn in the Entered Apprentice degree that the first stone of a building is usually laid in the northeast corner, whereupon to erect the future super-structure. While the Masonic conerstone ceremony is today largely symbolic, our operative predecessors would first lay a conerstone when beginning the task of erecting their buildings. The conerstone was vital to the stability and strength of the building, since all vertical and horizontal measurements for erecting the structure were made from the corner. If the cornerstone was not properly laid as a reference point, the other foundation stones would be laid incorrectly, and the building was in danger of collapsing. Freemasonry at the founding of the American Republic was vital to enduring strength and stability of this nation. Had this nation started with a weak foundation stone, the experiment in republican government would have failed. Indeed, many of the founding fathers were themselves fearful that the new republic was a precarious experiment. Republics had existed before 1776, but all were confided to cities or very small states, and ended in either tyranny or anarchy. Never before in history had men attempted to create a republic of such geographic extent and such a large and varied population. The republic needed solic foundation stones to have even a chance at survival. Freemasonry was, and remains, such a foundation stone. As a channle of transmitting the social and politcal ideas of the 17th century england and the 18th century enlightenment to the 13 colonies, Freemasonry's cosmopolitan view of the world played a significant role during and after the American Revolution. Freemasonry had an extraordinary unifying effect socially, polically and culturally on the new republic. As a foundation stone of the American Republic, Freemasonry continues to hold a powerful vision for the United States. The founding fathers laid a straight and true foundation, and 226 years later we have been entrusted to continue the work. May the Great Architect give us the strength and wisdom to follow in HIS GRAND DESIGN.

FreeMasonry as a religion?
Masonry is a fraternity, not a religion. Masonry acknowledges the existence of God and teaches that without a religion, man can never reach his full potential. But Masonry does not tell a person what religion he should practice or how he should practice it. That is the function of his own worship, not his fraternity. Sometimes people confuse Masonry with a religion because we call some Masonic builings, "Temples". But we use the word in the same sense as the Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes called the Supreme Court a "Temple of Justice." Neither Masonry nor the Supreme Court is a religion just because its members meet in a "Temple." Masonry is merely a fraternity of brothers and friends who work together to try to make themselves better. They are united in that cause, and others. We, as a worldwide fraternity, give over 2 million dollars per day to charitable causes. For our fraternity to be a religion we would have to have a plan of salvation, a doctrine, and a centralized God in which we all believed in. However, as I stated above we are free to believe in whatever God we so choose to, because we are a fraternity not a church we cant discriminate members because of their religious beliefs. If you were to join a College fraternity , they wouldn't tell you that you have no admittance to their fraternity because of your own personal beliefs. We may all believe in different Gods but we all strive for the same prupose. Statistically 90% of all American Masons are Christian and worldwide 85% are of the Christian faith. As masons we do not make judgements upon a person'spersonal religious beliefs; however, we do state that to join our fraternity you must be a member of some faith that is not a cult and you cannot be athiest. As masons we have no fraternal savior, we offer no plans of salvation as does a church, we premote no scripture, and we have no prophets. All masons are encrouaged to be active in their choice of church whether it be a church/synagog or a mosque. It has been said that we pray and so therefore that means we are a religion, let me just say that the Boy Scouts/Girl Scouts and the Senate and The House of Represenatives pray as do many other institutions. Are they a religion? Absolutely Not! and neither are we. We are composed of religious men, so it would be natural that we pray. The prayers we pray in lodge are generic, that way all men of all faiths can join in without pointing out one God and saying that God is the correct God to trust. If we were a church then we could pointedly say you cannot join our church because you are not of our beliefs just as a Catholic wouldnt join a Baptist church. But since we are a fraternity that isnt a religion and does not teach religion we therefore do not discriminate against a mans beliefs in his own religion and then deny him the right to join our fraternity. We are often referred to as a cult....have you ever seen a cult with so many hospitals dedicated to giving children of many diseases and illnesses free care and surgeries? As Masons we believe in the common commandments of God and by that I mean we believe in treating your neighbor as a brother/sister, doing good unto others, helpting your fellowman out when they are in need, and always showling them love, all religions no matter what they may be stress these same principles in their doctrines. WE are ugjustly judged as a cult, but before you judge us be sure your facts are straight and until you have experienced something dont always be so quick to believe the negative biased opions of others, and always make your own decisions about something dont let someone make them for you.

This is the official seal of Missouri.
This is my good friend Hal. I took this picture on his birthday. I think he likes to be in pictures.
